Creosote is something you probably know all about, if you still use your old fireplace. When you burn wood, the by-product is a corrosive, toxic, and highly combustible substance, called creosote. One hazard of a fireplace, comes after years of use, when the built-up creosote can ignite inside the chimney.

This substance is dangerous, so if you have it in your chimney, you need to get someone to remove it. This is one job that needs to be done right, so find a company which is reputable, that the will dispose of the creosote properly, and the chimney will be adequately cleaned.

Have you heard of Buss fuses? These were installed in older houses. Electrical wiring now uses circuit breakers, not fuses, in modern homes today. You can still get away with using fuses if that is what your house has. It would be beneficial to transition from fuses to modern circuit breaker panels if possible.

There are more than one good reason for doing so, and you must have a qualified electrician take care of this for you. Your CB panel should be installed properly, as long as it matches the current rating that your home is supposed to have.

The cost of energy keeps going up, and you know it every time you see the bill. Looking ahead is made somewhat easier when you know what to expect, and that happens with things that the price is known to never go down. When you know that energy costs are only going up, you need to find ways to be as efficient as you can, in the energy you use.

Take your refrigerator for example, there are coils in the back of it that have to receive adequate ventilation. It is up to you to make sure the normal air flow doesn’t become restricted. The coils on your refrigerator also need to be free of dust buildup or the efficiency will decrease.

We strongly recommend you have a licensed electrician take care of the other two tips. But they will not cost you a lot of money, and you will be enhancing the safety of your home.
